Hi All and welcome to January’s Jam Blog.

Ok, ok, I know it’s now February but it’s been a long month with a lot going on!

Introducing Carly Smith

In January we welcomed a new president Carly Smith.

Carly has been a member of Let’s Make Jam since October 2016, having found out about LMJ after coming across an exciting post on her friend’s (Beki Brown’s) Facebook page. “I saw a post on Facebook of her ‘at archery’ with her W.I. I’d been contemplating joining a W.I. and saw that post. It was like the stars had aligned!”

While she admits, like many of us, to being a little nervous and not knowing what to expect the first time she walked through the big LMJ doors, she had a friend in Beki and soon made more.

In January we also welcomed ‘Taste of History’s’ Jill & Mark Hatch who introduce us to a ‘Potted’ (do you see what I did there) history of cuisine from the Classical Age of the ancient Greek and Romans, up to more modern times some 2,500 years later, paying special attention to Medieval Cookery! We learned about the diets of both the rich and poor, cooking techniques, faithful recreations of recipes and a chance to sample simple but freshly cooked original dishes.

We got to take turns making butter, was shown the quickest way to make cheese and were even waited on by our lovely committee ladies.

It really was a warm and wonderful evening with lots of laughter, so thank you Jill & Mark. I will never look at my slow cooker or cream cheese in the same way ever again,

Joining or Renewal of Subscriptions

January is also Renewal Month! So if you have not already done so or its your first time and are unsure how to go about it, please ask a member of the committee who can help you and point you in the right direction. Bank transfer is always best and probably the easiest way to pay, but you can also pay by cash. The annual subscription fee for the W.I. is £42, However you may visit us at LMJ up to 3 in order to get to know us before you make the decision of formally joining our happy band. Membership also includes 8 publications of WI Life magazine and all of the meetings. It also helps to cover any materials used, the cost of the speakers and refreshments.

Bring a friend with you!

If like our President Carly, myself and many other members, you feel a little nervous coming for the first time alone then please feel free bring a friend or two with you. It’s just as easy to make a cuppa for two or three, as one.

Upcoming Events

Our next get together will be Jammy Hookers on Thursday 7th of February at the new Costa Coffee (by TGI Friday’s) in Hanley from 7.30pm onward. Coffee, Cake and Crochet, whats not to love?

P.s. You don’t even have to crochet, you can knit, felt, tie, sew or just come for the coffee and company.
