100 entries for 100 years of the WI !

Our aim was to “Rock the County Show”, by entering 100 individual entries to celebrate this centenary year! What an amazing achievement!!

Quote of the evening – “Oh youuuuuuu are from Lets Make Jam – you are all so young!”

Attending the preview evening alongside about 300+ other WI members was a real honour! So many women were really impressed by the quantity we entered but also the quality! The most common question I was asked was “How do we do it?” – well not every group has a Julie 😉 However we have been challenged to do bigger and better next year – a group from just outside Lichfield are certainly determined to out enter us!

The best item in show came from a group entry – a large beaded toad named Tabitha made by Stephney Hornblow from Barton Under Needwood. Stephney was totally overwhelmed by the award and was very reluctant to admit how many hours she had lovingly spent sewing the tiniest of seed beads and sequins. Just like a real toad Tabitha had a rough textured beaded back and a super smooth sequin belly. She also made the banner for the group entry that wasn’t judged – the banner alone contained over 13,875 beads!

Congratulations Stephney we will be taking up your offer of  a garden visit!11356345_10153230887185733_1049232829_n

We too had our fair share of success with a handful of third placings a second and a highly commended! The scores in all categories were really high many of you scored 18/20 but didn’t place. There were amazing comments on your feedback cards – “Excellent Craftsmanship”

Alongside admiring the best crafts in the county the Lord Mayor of Stafford toasted the WI and all the organisation has achieved, the biggest cheer of the evening however was hearing the Bishop announce the dropping of the WI Knickers – a washing line of ladies undergarments from 1915 – 2015, pants started off big got tiny and are thankfully getting big and comfy again with the 2015 hipster shorts.

The WI tent looks amazing! Fabulous flowers, a new flag and Jam Girl Beryl’s 100 year green and purple hand knitted bunting the adorns every table. If you can get to the show its really worth a visit – the WI tent is open for tea cakes and craft envy until 5pm Thursday 28th May.

Well done everyone!
